Kalimpong Arts: Tibetan Silk Potli

The Tibetan Potli (Tibetan Silk Pouches) have been one of the major handicraft of the Kalimpong Hills. These are made from special silk brocade with Tibetan, Buddhist embroidery. Available in various colors and sizes, these were used to store significant items like gold/silver coins, religious, sacred items by the Tibetan traders who traveled to Kalimpong during the silk trade.

Historically, these were crafted by the local women, who were paid for the fine art. These are still produced locally with the traditional techniques and signifies the blending of Tibetan, Bhutanese and Nepali culture, when these were produced by the locals and shipped to Tibet as well as various regions of India.

We at Healing Hills are helping to promote and support the local artisans, to grow and get recognized for their talents. Any handicraft purchased benefits the local artisans, keeping the centuries old tradition alive.
